April 2017After many years of just enjoying the car, some repairs became necessary this year. Maybe 2 years ago, I noticed gear fluid leaking from the axle housing. I always assumed it was a minor leak where the carrier meets the housing. It was just a few drops now and then, so didn't really require attention. However, when I was putting the car to bed for the winter in 2016, I saw gear oil under the right rear tire. Turns out the axle seal had failed, and the gear oil was simply migrating along the housing from the wheel to the carrier. So, before putting it on the road for 2017, I removed the right axle, removed the old seal, and installed a new one. I repacked the bearings before reinstalling the axle, and cleaned up the brakes and drum, to remove any remnants of gear oil. Also had to set the end play again; I probably made it a little more snug than I had previously, as I read that excessive end play can be the cause of axle seal failure. I'm happy to report - no more drips of axle fluid on the garage floor! |
